Your Body’s Language
Description
Listen to your body. Not only is it talking to you more often than you may know, but it has some very meaningful if not crucial information to impart to you
To Do
“...at this moment your first and most reliable guide to happiness is your body. The body is designed to support the mind, and this mutual support creates the state known as happiness. When choosing a certain behavior, ask your body, "How do you feel about this?" If your body sends a signal of physical or emotional distress, watch out. If your body sends a signal of comfort and eagerness, proceed.
Together, mind and body form a whole. It is artificial to separate the two. You cannot have a single thought, sensation or feeling without the body. This includes the most inspired spiritual thoughts, feelings and sensations. All experience has a physical component.
Let's say that your body doesn't feel like your guide and friend. Why not? It's not because you have gained weight, fallen out of shape or grow older every day. It's lack of awareness.
Awareness has tremendous power. It tunes into every cell. Awareness is the invisible, silent agent that lets your body know what your mind is thinking, and at the same time it sends feedback from the body so that the mind feels supported and understood.”

Nourish Yourself
“One of the most important ways for you to become a healthy eater is to learn to listen closely to what your body tells you, to recognize what it needs and desires in order to feel fit and comfortable. When you listen long and hard enough to your body, you will begin to differentiate sensations and feelings, and to become aware of your own capacity to react to hunger and satiety.
Your body will not lead you astray if you know what it needs and can respond appropriately. If you are capable of taking good care of your body, it will perform well for you.
How well do you listen to your body?
Your body will not lead you astray if you know what it needs and can respond appropriately. If you are capable of taking good care of your body, it will perform well for you.
How well do you listen to your body?
- Do you know when you are hungry?
- Do you know when you are satisfied?
- Do you know when you are full?
- Do you know if you are too fat, too thin or just right?
- Are you unduly preoccupied with your body shape and size?
- Do you know what to eat to satisfy your body?
- Do you know how much is the right amount for your body?
- Are you aware of what you are feeling?
o Do you feel frightened of food or of becoming fat?
o Do you feel guilty after you eat? - Do you know when you are eating to quiet your nerves or to soothe your sadness?
- Do you know how to ask others for what you need or want?
- Are you used to establishing goals for yourself and accomplishing those goals?
By learning to listen to your hunger and satiety gauges, you’ll also be getting good practice in becoming responsive to your feelings in general. Your feelings are guideposts, coping tools, indicating what you need in life, when, and why, and how to go about securing it. Through accessing your feelings, you will learn how to make healthy demands of yourself and others, to recognize and enforce boundaries between yourself and others, and to resolve conflicts effectively.
Listening to yourself will help you to solve problems effectively and eat responsibly.
The problem is how to achieve good health and fitness.
The solution is to give your body nutritious and varied foods regularly, in the form of meals and snacks, and to remain active in your daily lifestyle.
The problem is how much to give your body.
The solution is just what your body needs to feel satiated, no more, no less. You must learn to listen to and to hear your body’s signals. It will let you know what it needs.
The problem is when you feel that your internal gauges or perceptions of self are not functioning accurately, and not giving you adequate signals.
The solution is to attempt to make your next meal healthier, and never to skip a meal. Set small goals for yourself and gradually work your way towards accomplishing them, one by one.” http://www.empoweredparents.com/1healthyeating/healthy_08.htm

Get Up & Go!
“Many people injure themselves because they are so obsessed with trying to reach 30 minutes of continuous exercise that they do not stop exercising when they feel pain. If you're out of shape, you should start out by exercising in each session only until your muscles feel heavy or hurt and then you should quit for the day. Eventually, you should be able to work up to a full 30 minutes.
If you can't exercise for 30 minutes continuously in one sport, try to get at least 30 minutes total exercise or vigorous activity during the day. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, you don't have to engage in vigorous exercise for sustained periods to gain substantial health benefits. If you exercise for 30 seconds, rest for 30 seconds and alternate exercising and resting, you should be able to exercise far longer without injuring yourself. If you tire early in one sport, you can exercise in several sports, stopping in each when you feel the least discomfort. For example, go to your aerobic dance class and stop when you feel the least bit tired, even if you have to quit after two minutes. Rest, and then ride a stationary bike until your legs start to feel heavy, perhaps for three minutes. Later in the day, walk for a while until you feel tired. Try for a combined total time of 30 minutes of exercise per day, three to five days a week. You can count any physical activity that keeps you moving constantly, such as walking, climbing stairs or gardening.”

Listen to your body for balance and health:
“How often do you ignore basic needs? Do you rest when you are tired? Do you get as much sleep as you need? Do you eat when you are hungry, and stop eating when you’ve had enough? Do you drink when you are thirsty? Do you even notice? Our bodies tell us what they need to be balanced. Our job is to listen.
We can go a lot further than paying attention to these most basic needs. The need for sleep can be a loud signal from the body, but we can start to notice “softer” cues that our bodies give us as well. As we increase the awareness of our body’s signals, we get a lot of valuable information about how to keep it in balance.
The more we can perceive about what is going on in our bodies and emotions, the better. If you start to notice more subtle messages from your body, you can become aware of an imbalance before it manifests in a disease. You can notice when you begin to get tired and take a meditation break or a catnap. You can feel discomfort in your body before it screams in pain from a repetitive motion injury. You can notice things early and nip problems in the bud.
Of course, awareness is only the first step. Once you are aware of what your body is telling you, you need to follow through the action to bring it in balance. It can be difficult to form this habit. You may feel you don’t have the time, but in the long run a little time and attention here and there to care for your body can help avoid spending a lot of time having to heal something, not to mention avoiding unnecessary pain.” http://heartofhealing.net/2009/01/27/listen-to-your-body-for-balance-and-health/

Listen to Your Body - The Power of Self-Healing
“As long as the body is healthy, it will take care of itself for the most part. The body can heal itself quiet well without the help of prescription medication and doctors. We tend to forget about this because most of us believe that we need a prescription to cure any ailment we may have.
Because society is so fast paced today, there are several vital elements that our body tells us we need to do, but we simply ignore:
- Taking a nap or sleeping when you're tired. When you're tired and ready for that 3 o'clock nap, we tend to ignore the urge and grab coffee or soda instead.
- Not using the restroom. Ignoring your need to evacuate is a huge issue. Many women suffer from urinary incontinence because "holding it" all day causes the muscles to become weak. This causes our bodies to work against what it knows to do naturally as well as holds in toxins that it needs to get out.
- Taking anti-diarrheal. There is a reason that you develop diarrhea. Your body needs to get the "bug" out of its body and there is only one way for it to do that.
- Suppressing sneezing. Your body tells you to sneeze because there is something foreign in it that it needs to get out quickly.
- Ignoring headaches. When your head is throbbing, lie down and find the cause. Don't just assume that your aspirin will take care of you.
- Feeding fevers. A fever is your body's natural way of burning a virus or "bug" out of your system. If you let the fever continue then you can sweat it out. If you take a medication to stop the fever, the bug or virus will remain inside you.
- Overeating. One of the most common things we do to our bodies is eat too much. Most people eat when they're not even hungry.”
Question
How does your body speak to you? Do you generally pay attention to what it is saying?

The Western concept of the Mind-Body Connection went through five different stages:
1. Natural Philosophies always start with the Physical,
2. The birth of Holism,
3. Interest in the Stresses of Modern Life,
4. Development of the Wellness Movement, and
5. Formulation of the complete Biopsychosocial Model of Health, Wellness, and Illness.

in its historical development.
"The close relationship of emotions to disease [has] been ... central to the long history of medical practice.
For centuries and long before the first glimmerings of modern science, physicians and non-physicians alike have acknowledged that the way people felt in their minds could influence the way they responded in their bodies. When prevailing medical theory denied the very possibility of such interactions, common experience and sometimes quite startling clinical encounters suggested otherwise.
In the post- (Civil) war period, physicians developed an interest in war-induced stress, and soon identified similar syndromes in the normal population.
